Quarterbacks set the tone as college football opens with dominant wins
Julian Sayin, Dante Moore, Gunner Stockton and Arch Manning produced standout Week 1 numbers, though many leading teams faced weaker opposition.
College football’s opening week delivered eye-catching performances from several highly rated quarterbacks, even as many top-ranked teams faced inferior opponents. Ohio State, Oregon, Georgia and Texas all secured wins, with Oregon’s 34-27 victory over Boise State the closest of the highlighted games, according to Yahoo Sports.
Julian Sayin completed 21 of 25 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns in Ohio State’s 56-3 win over Ball State. He also rushed for a touchdown, giving the Buckeyes a commanding start to the season.
Oregon quarterback Dante Moore threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns without committing a turnover against Boise State. The Ducks were tested in a competitive contest, but Moore’s production helped secure the result.
Georgia’s Gunner Stockton completed 15 of 16 passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns as the Bulldogs defeated Tennessee State 63-3. Texas also opened with a substantial win, beating Texas State 59-7 as Arch Manning threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns, with one interception.
The early results provide limited grounds for direct comparison, with only one opening-weekend game initially featuring two preseason AP Top 25 teams. Ohio State and Texas are scheduled to meet in Week 2, bringing Sayin and Manning into a more prominent early-season match-up.
