Qualcomm to impose double-digit price hikes on components from September

Qualcomm has notified its customers of a double-digit price increase for its components, with the new rates taking effect for products shipped after 1 September. The semiconductor manufacturer sent a letter to clients on Friday outlining the adjustments, which Bloomberg reported were driven by the company’s inability to continue absorbing rising supplier costs.
In its communication, Qualcomm stated that it had attempted to source components from alternative suppliers before deciding on the price adjustments. The company cited ongoing component shortages across the industry as a primary factor, noting that it has exhausted its capacity to absorb further cost increases without passing them on to downstream manufacturers.
The price hikes are anticipated to have a ripple effect across the consumer electronics sector, particularly impacting manufacturers of smartphones and personal computers. Qualcomm’s chips are integral to a wide range of devices, including Samsung’s foldable phones and upcoming smartglasses. Device makers may face pressure to increase retail prices if they pass the majority of these increased component costs onto consumers.
This development follows earlier commitments from Qualcomm to support more affordable hardware, including a promise made earlier this year to deliver a new chip platform capable of powering $300 Windows PCs.
