Quaker Steak & Lube to shutter final US outlet as steakhouse sector reels from inflation
The Clearwater, Florida location will close on July 5, 2026, marking the end of an era for the brand as it shrinks from 27 to 26 stores while competitors face similar headwinds.

Quaker Steak & Lube is preparing to permanently close its last United States location in Clearwater, Florida, on July 5, 2026. The move reduces the chain’s domestic footprint from 27 to 26 stores, signalling a continued contraction for the brand as it navigates a challenging macroeconomic environment. General Manager Hilliary Smith confirmed the closure via a Facebook post, noting that the establishment, which opened in 2003, will cease operations after business hours on the specified date.
The closure occurs against a backdrop of significant financial pressure across the US steakhouse sector, driven largely by inflationary forces. According to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, beef prices surged 16% to reach $12.73 per pound in March 2026. This spike in input costs has forced menu price increases that have discouraged diner traffic, squeezing margins for operators ranging from high-end establishments to budget-focused chains.
Quaker Steak & Lube is not operating in isolation. The sector has witnessed widespread closures over the past three months, including locations operated by Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar, McCormick & Schmick’s, and Stoney River Steakhouse and Grill. Outback Steakhouse parent company Bloomin’ Brands has also announced it will close 22 additional locations in 2026 as leases expire, following the closure of 21 sites in 2025.
Franchise analysts point to rising wages as a compounding factor exacerbating these pressures. Michael J. Ingram, vice president and principal at National Franchise Sales, noted that high-wage markets are particularly vulnerable. He explained that franchisees face an uphill battle to cover existing debt and rising expenses, as menu price hikes eventually lead to customer attrition. This dynamic has already impacted other operators, with Golden Corral franchisee Conroe Corral Murphy LLC filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Texas in June 2026.
The Clearwater location’s closure marks another chapter in Quaker Steak & Lube’s volatile history. The chain, which opened in 1974, filed for bankruptcy in November 2015 before being sold out of bankruptcy for $25 million. In 2021, TravelCenters of America sold the brand to JDK Management Company for $5 million. JDK, which also franchises Perkins Restaurants and owns several Pennsylvania hotels, had previously stated its intention to maximize the brand’s potential, yet the current reduction in store count suggests a more cautious approach to expansion amid the prevailing economic headwinds.
