Proton Mail updates migration tool to ease exit from Google ecosystem
The Swiss-based email service now allows users to send from Gmail addresses within its interface, aiming to reduce data tracking and facilitate a gradual transition away from Google services.

Proton Mail has updated its Easy Switch tool to allow users to send emails from their Gmail addresses directly within the Proton service. This enhancement complements existing capabilities to import and view Gmail messages, marking a strategic move to help users transition away from Google. The company cites growing privacy concerns and Google’s increasing integration of artificial intelligence, including an AI-first overhaul of its Search experience, as key drivers for this shift.
The updated tool facilitates a comprehensive migration process. Beyond email, Proton Mail supports the transfer of attachments, calendars, contacts, conversations, Google Photos, and Google Drive files to Proton Drive. The service is designed to strip trackers, ads, and spam from incoming messages, while ensuring that messages exchanged between Proton users remain end-to-end encrypted.
Proton advises a gradual migration strategy for users wishing to decouple from Google. The recommended approach involves managing emails through Proton first, then updating logins for important services to use a Proton Mail address, and finally deleting Google accounts. The company notes that while some users may retain their Gmail addresses for extended periods, managing emails through Proton prevents Google from using email activity to build user profiles.
Addressing common concerns regarding data security, Proton stated that connecting a Gmail account does not grant Google access to the Proton Mail inbox. This ensures that privacy remains intact during the transition period. The service automatically pulls in emails received via the connected Gmail address, allowing users to manage their correspondence without exposing their data to the original platform.
While other third-party clients such as Microsoft Outlook, Apple Mail, and Thunderbird can also manage Gmail messages, Proton highlights its end-to-end encryption as a distinct advantage. The move comes amid a broader trend of users seeking alternatives, evidenced by a sustained surge in installs for competitor DuckDuckGo following Google’s recent search announcements.
