New entrants including MeetMarket, Chunkr, and Streakr offer decentralised alternatives to Big Dating’s monetisation strategies

A growing cohort of privacy-focused gay dating applications is emerging to challenge the market dominance of Grindr, driven by widespread user dissatisfaction with aggressive monetisation, advertising saturation, and data security concerns. Platforms including MeetMarket, Chunkr, and Streakr are positioning themselves as community-powered alternatives to established conglomerates, responding to a backlash against what users describe as engagement-optimised models that prioritise shareholder returns over user experience.

The shift in sentiment follows significant turbulence in the sector, notably Match Group’s $100 million investment in Sniffies in April, which sparked fears that another queer space would be absorbed into a larger dating monopoly. Concurrently, Grindr has faced criticism for its heavy advertising load and the introduction of a premium monthly subscription tier priced at $500 in February as part of its “gAI” overhaul. In response to user feedback regarding the balance of the experience, Grindr stated it has rolled out changes to reduce interruptions for free users and welcomed the new competition.

MeetMarket, launched by Calum Bowden on March 24, has recorded over 12,000 sign-ups in its first 48 hours and approximately 60,000 users since. The web-based application utilises a decentralised identity system and end-to-end encryption to ensure user data remains on personal devices, with Bowden committing to an ad-free model even for non-paying members. The app averages 5,000 weekly visitors, though Bowden notes that concurrent activity in specific cities remains low, with the platform evolving into a more social network than a purely transactional hookup tool.

To ensure long-term alignment with its community, Bowden is structuring MeetMarket under a steward ownership model. This framework splits the business into three components: voting shares for users, economic shares for investors who hold no voting rights, and a foundation with a golden share to veto any sale or alteration of core principles. Bowden has launched a crowdfunding campaign offering founding memberships at €60 ($69) annually or €225 ($262) for lifetime access, granting contributors a say in feature development and fund allocation.

Other entrants are targeting specific niches with similar privacy commitments. Justin Finnegan created Chunkr, an iOS-only application that claims not to collect any data, catering to bears, chubs, and cubs while addressing the fragmentation of the gay dating market. Finnegan is also developing Rush, a sister product aimed at men who do not identify with Chunkr’s primary community. Meanwhile, Streakr, an app for both gay and straight daters, debuted less than a month ago and has received positive feedback from testers, further illustrating the demand for specialised, privacy-conscious digital spaces.
