JJ Gabriel crowned Premier League’s U18 Player of the Season
Inaugural award recognises standout youth campaign amid first-team training integration

The Premier League has announced JJ Gabriel as the inaugural recipient of the U18 Player of the Season award, recognising his performance for Manchester United’s academy side. The 15-year-old forward was nominated alongside defender Albert Mills, with Gabriel ultimately securing the honour following a prolific term in which he scored 26 goals and provided four assists in all competitions.

Gabriel’s statistics include 23 goals in 23 U18 Premier League games and three strikes in the FA Youth Cup, contributing to United’s progression to the final against Manchester City scheduled for May 14. His output equates to a goal involvement approximately every 82 minutes, a metric that distinguished him among the division’s other nominees.

The award follows a period of increased visibility for Gabriel within the senior setup. He attended first-team training sessions under former head coach Ruben Amorim, a practice that has continued under current interim manager Michael Carrick. Speculation had previously suggested Gabriel might make his senior debut in the FA Cup during the interim tenure of Darren Fletcher, but such a move did not materialise.

Due to age eligibility regulations, Gabriel is ineligible to make a senior Premier League debut this season. He is currently an England U17 international, and while he could potentially become Manchester United’s youngest-ever first-team debutant next season, any such integration would depend on his performance during pre-season and subsequent call-ups.

Gabriel’s rapid ascent began last season when, at age 14, he became the youngest-ever player to feature for United’s U18s. He scored twice as a 63rd-minute substitute in a 13-1 victory over Leeds United, marking an early milestone in a campaign that has now seen him recognised by the league’s official awards body.
