Why Mauricio Pochettino’s fluid tactics are unlocking a dangerous USMNT attack after a brutal learning curve
Coach’s high-intensity system shows promise ahead of World Cup

The United States men’s national football team secured a 3-2 victory over Senegal in a friendly match in Fayetteville, Georgia, on Sunday, serving as a tactical showcase for head coach Mauricio Pochettino. Since his appointment in late 2024, Pochettino has implemented a fluid, attack-oriented system characterised by high intensity and positional flexibility. The result marks a significant shift for a squad that has historically struggled to maintain such intensity for full 90-minute matches and has not traditionally been an offence-focused team.

Captain Tim Ream and player Sergino Dest emphasised the team's improved physical conditioning and tactical understanding following a difficult learning period. Ream noted that the integration of high-intensity play with complex tactical movements required players to use their brains while physically exerting themselves, a combination that has now become more automatic. The squad appears to have reached a point where tactical movements are instinctive, supported by players being in top physical condition.

The match highlighted the integration of attacking players including Christian Pulisic, Ricardo Pepi, and Folarin Balogun. Pochettino made 10 changes at halftime, asking a new group of players to maintain the high-intensity attacking approach established in the first half. The USMNT scored two goals within a 20-minute period against a rotated Senegal defence, with key attacking contributions from Pulisic, Pepi, and Dest.

Dest’s role exemplified the fluidity of Pochettino’s system, with the coach utilising his ability to drop deep and switch positions with Alex Freeman to unbalance the opposition. While Dest described his role as a wingback, Ream characterised him as a right winger who should have played higher up the pitch. This discrepancy highlights the positional flexibility inherent in the coach’s setup, where defenders are encouraged to participate in attacking phases.

The victory comes as the team prepares for the World Cup co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico, with the tournament commencing in nine days. International football typically involves short training camps, making the implementation of complex tactical systems challenging compared to club football. However, the USMNT’s performance suggests that Pochettino’s ambitious plan is gaining traction, positioning the team as an intriguing stylistic competitor on the global stage.
