Mauricio Pochettino has urged patience with young players as the United States men’s national team begins a new cycle after its round-of-16 exit at the 2026 World Cup. The first of four friendlies is against Peru.

The US Soccer coach selected 13 uncapped players alongside 12 members of the World Cup squad. He said the newcomers should play when both they and the coaching staff consider them ready, and that some may need more time in training before featuring.

Pochettino said he may mix younger players with senior teammates across the matches, with opportunities dependent on the staff’s assessment. The squad includes 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan, identified as the youngest player in camp.

Midfielder Tyler Adams said the new arrivals have more time to develop than players faced after the United States failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. He described the current group as able to gain experience through the development process and other competitions.

Pochettino also criticised the schedule of four friendlies in 11 days, citing limited rest, travel and demands on players arriving from European pre-season or during the MLS season. He said more space between games would better support the team’s development.
