Super Yooka-Laylee Kart looks like an old-school Mario Kart for the modern age
Developer shifts from platforming roots to a pixel-art kart racer inspired by 1992 Nintendo classic

Playtonic Games has announced Super Yooka-Laylee Kart, a new arcade racing title that marks a significant genre departure for the Yooka-Laylee franchise. Previously known for its platforming entries, including spiritual successors to Rare’s Banjo-Kazooie series, the developer is shifting focus to a kart racing format heavily inspired by Nintendo’s 1992 title, Super Mario Kart. The announcement was made during the Summer Game Fest edition of Day of the Devs.

The game retains the pixel-art aesthetic and track mechanics of its 1990s predecessor, featuring characters from the Yooka-Laylee series racing on courses populated with coins and power-up boxes. Playtonic describes the project as a skill-based, pixel-perfect arcade racer where mastering mechanics and items is essential. While the visual style and core loop evoke the original, the title introduces modernised features to distinguish itself from the classic template.

A central mechanic in Super Yooka-Laylee Kart is the "Rage system," which accumulates as players jostle for position or sustain damage from opponents. Once triggered, this system unlocks devastating revenge abilities designed to facilitate tactical comebacks and alter the outcome of races instantly. The studio emphasises that these mechanics are intended to reward strategic play and resilience during competitive laps.

Beyond standard racing, the title includes a deep story campaign comprising tournaments, time trials, endurance events, and skill challenges. Players can utilise collected coins to purchase upgrades, adding a layer of progression to the arcade formula. The game supports both online multiplayer modes and local split-screen play for up to eight participants, catering to both competitive and casual audiences.

Race settings are highly customisable, allowing players to modify track elements such as making competitors invisible or altering boost pad functions to slow players down instead of accelerating them. Playtonic Games confirmed that Super Yooka-Laylee Kart is currently in development for Steam. Online multiplayer beta tests are planned to begin soon, though the developer has not yet announced a specific release date or confirmed console availability, including potential support for the Nintendo Switch 2.

The announcement coincides with a broader wave of game reveals during the Summer Game Fest period, including titles from StudioMDHR, Metanet, Sega, Bandai Namco, Capcom, and Maverick Games. While the Yooka-Laylee series has a dedicated following, this pivot to racing represents a distinct evolution for the studio’s portfolio, aiming to capture the nostalgia of early kart racers while introducing fresh tactical depth.
