PlayStation Studios confirms God of War Laufey, shifting focus to Faye in 2027 release
PlayStation Studios has officially announced God of War Laufey, a new entry in the franchise that places Faye, also known as Laufey, as the playable protagonist. The game is scheduled for a 2027 or later launch.

PlayStation Studios has officially confirmed the development of God of War Laufey, a new title that expands the franchise’s narrative beyond the Norse saga. The game will feature Faye, the wife of protagonist Kratos, as the playable character. This announcement follows years of speculation regarding a Faye-centric project, with the studio now providing concrete details on the title’s scope and timeline.
A 20-minute gameplay preview was released to demonstrate the new mechanics and setting. The footage begins with Faye awakening in an unfamiliar realm after witnessing her own funeral pyre, a scene mirroring the conclusion of the 2018 God of War. She retains knowledge of the events that transpired, noting that she saw Kratos and Atreus begin their journey. The narrative is set to run parallel to the existing Norse saga, unfolding alongside the experiences of Kratos and Atreus.
The setting introduces a new location described as the "Everywhen," a realm character Phranque identifies as the afterlife of the Gods. This area serves as a battleground where deities from various mythologies compete for power. The environment is distinct from the Norse settings established in previous titles, featuring enemies that differ significantly from those encountered by Kratos and Atreus.
Combat for Faye utilises magic and a new weapon system. During a battle sequence where she escapes imprisonment, Faye acquires a blade attached to sentient ribbons named Rue. These ribbons prevent the weapon from being lost to enemies, allowing Faye to project and retrieve the blade for combat. The preview highlights that her playstyle differs from the established protagonists, offering a unique approach to the franchise’s signature action.
The game is expected to release in 2027 or later, with no specific launch date confirmed at this time. God of War has been a critical and commercial success for Sony since its 2018 reboot, sitting alongside major franchises such as The Last of Us and Horizon. The franchise’s cultural footprint continues to expand, with a live-action adaptation currently in development for Amazon Prime Video.
