Phillies bolster Triple-A depth with Carlson signing and Moore assignment

The Philadelphia Phillies have signed former Gold Glove winner Dylan Carlson to a minor-league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The move comes shortly after Carlson’s release from the Chicago Cubs, with the organisation seeking to mitigate a critical shortage in centre field. According to The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Scott Lauber, the team is described as “dangerously thin” in the outfield, a situation exacerbated by Johan Rojas serving an 80-game suspension for failing a drug test.

Carlson, a switch-hitter with eight years of major-league experience, joins a Triple-A outfield group that includes Steward Berroa, Bryan De La Cruz, and utility man Otto Kemp. The signing is viewed as a necessary personnel tweak to maintain the team’s recent momentum under their new manager, providing immediate depth while the major-league roster navigates its suspension-related gaps.

In a separate development, the Phillies have officially added utility player Dylan Moore to the Triple-A Lehigh Valley roster after he accepted an outright assignment. Moore was designated for assignment earlier this season following 13 big-league appearances, during which he played multiple positions including first base, second base, left field, centre field, designated hitter, and even pitched.

Moore brings significant versatility to the organisation, having won a Gold Glove Award as a utility player in 2024 while with the Seattle Mariners. His career statistics from 2020 to 2024 with the Mariners include 43 home runs, 93 stolen bases, and a 105 wRC+ over 1,397 plate appearances. MLB Trade Rumors’ Darragh McDonald noted Moore’s capability as a multi-positional asset, highlighting his ability to move around the diamond despite a career batting average that has historically been low.

Moore’s brief debut with the Phillies this season saw him record no hits with three walks, a steal, and three runs in 12 total at-bats. His return to the minor-league system suggests the club is giving him an opportunity to demonstrate offensive improvement. If he can refine his performance, he remains a candidate for another call-up, offering the Phillies flexibility across the infield and outfield.
