PGA Championship enters final round with historic five-way tie at Aronimink
The largest logjam through 54 holes of a major since 1933 sets up a chaotic Sunday at the PGA Championship, with Rory McIlroy closing to within one shot.

The PGA Championship has reached a historic deadlock after 54 holes at Aronimink Golf Club, with Jon Rahm and Ludvig Åberg sharing the lead in a five-way tie. The logjam, which includes Matti Schmid, Nick Taylor, and Aaron Rai all finishing at 4-under par (206), marks the largest group tied for the major championship lead since the 1933 British Open.
Rahm secured his share of the top spot with a 3-under 67, a round he described as fantastic despite a careless three-putt bogey on the final hole. Åberg, the Swedish Ryder Cup teammate, contributed a 68 to maintain the parity at the summit. The field remained exceptionally tight throughout Saturday, with 14 players holding at least a share of the lead at some point and 28 players separated by just two shots midway through the round.
Defending champion Scottie Scheffler found himself three shots off the pace after a round of 71. His round was hampered by significant putting struggles, including six missed putts inside 10 feet, four of which were for birdie. However, a crucial 9-foot bogey putt on the 18th hole prevented a larger deficit, keeping him within striking distance of the leaders as the tournament heads into Sunday.
Rory McIlroy mounted a significant charge, closing to within one shot of the lead with a 4-under 66. This performance marked his 25th score of 66 or better in a major championship. McIlroy began the day five shots back with 29 players ahead of him but expressed confidence in his position, noting that he did what was necessary to keep his chances alive for the final round.
Joining McIlroy in the group one shot behind the lead are two-time major champion Xander Schauffele and Patrick Reed, who finished at 3-under par (207). Schauffele, who won two majors in 2024, noted the satisfaction of being back in contention. The field, playing in warm and blustery conditions, now faces a final round where the outcome remains wide open.
