Penn State begins Campbell era with 45-0 rout of Marshall
Rocco Becht threw four touchdowns as Penn State controlled Marshall from the opening quarter in Matt Campbell’s first game as coach.
Penn State opened Matt Campbell’s tenure with a 45-0 victory over Marshall at Beaver Stadium, producing its largest season-opening win since a 79-7 result against Idaho in 2019.
Rocco Becht passed for 271 yards and a career-high four touchdowns as Penn State established a 17-0 lead in the first quarter and extended it to 24-0 by half-time. Becht completed 13 of 18 passes before giving way to backup quarterback Alex Manske early in the third quarter.
Koby Howard caught six passes for a career-high 161 yards and one touchdown. Penn State also scored rushing touchdowns through Quinton Martin Jr. and Cam Wallace, while freshman Zay Robinson added a 39-yard receiving touchdown.
The Nittany Lions outgained Marshall 487-147. The defence, coordinated by D’Anton Lynn, limited Marshall quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson to 102 passing yards and 30 rushing yards on 13 carries, with Penn State recording two sacks and seven quarterback hurries.
Campbell previously coached Iowa State for 10 seasons, with Becht having started the previous three seasons there under him. Penn State said the game was attended by 108,489 people.
