Punjab Kings head of sports science Andrew Leipus has moved to reassure stakeholders that pacer Arshdeep Singh remains unaffected by recent social media criticism, even as the franchise battles a five-match losing streak that has placed its playoff aspirations in jeopardy. The intervention comes ahead of a critical clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, with the team requiring victories against both Bengaluru and Lucknow Super Giants to maintain any realistic hope of reaching the postseason.
The scrutiny intensified following the circulation of a video in which Singh addressed Bengaluru batter Tilak Varma with the phrase “Oye andhere,” prompting accusations of casual racism from some fans. The controversy was compounded by Singh’s response to a supporter who had suggested the franchise remove “Punjab” from its name, with the pacer dismissing the advice by noting the individual still purchased snacks from family businesses.
Leipus, speaking at a pre-match press conference, characterised Singh’s demeanour as remarkably stable despite the external noise. Describing the left-arm pacer as a “very loud person” in the dressing room who is also “very calm,” Leipus noted that Singh’s behaviour has remained a “flat line” rather than fluctuating with the team’s fortunes. He emphasised that Singh continues to be a sociable and positive presence, leading from the front both on and off the field.
Addressing concerns regarding Singh’s recent performance inconsistencies, Leipus suggested that physical limitations may be a contributing factor. He indicated that the sports science staff had been reviewing the pacer’s body and identified potential restrictions that could be impacting his output.
