Payne’s digital surge outstrips New Zealand leadership amid World Cup buildup
The Wellington Phoenix player’s online reach now exceeds that of the Prime Minister and top rugby stars, even as the All Whites prepare for their lowest-ranked tournament campaign.

New Zealand defender Tim Payne has experienced a dramatic expansion in his digital footprint, with his social media following rising from approximately 4,715 to 660,000 in a matter of days. The surge was triggered by Argentine influencer Valen Scarsini, who posted a video encouraging his audience to support the Wellington Phoenix player, whom he labelled the least known at the World Cup.
Payne’s new follower count reportedly exceeds that of New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, All Blacks rugby star Ardie Savea, and Scarsini himself. The 32-year-old versatile defender responded to the viral attention by messaging Scarsini directly. "Was wondering why my socials were blowing up and found your post, man," Payne said. "Appreciate the love! Gracias, hermano."
This sudden visibility marks a shift for a player who has maintained a relatively low profile in recent years. Payne previously attracted legal scrutiny in 2020 while in Australia, where he broke quarantine and was charged with a drink-driving offence for taking a golf cart on a joyride with a teammate. He was subsequently fined A$700 by a Sydney court for the incident.
Payne has now been included in Darren Bazeley’s squad for the tournament and is looking to add to his 50 New Zealand caps. As the lowest-ranked team at the World Cup, the New Zealand squad faces significant challenges as they prepare for their Group G campaign.
The All Whites are scheduled to open their tournament against Iran in Los Angeles on June 15. They will subsequently face Egypt and Belgium in the group stage, with Payne aiming to leverage his renewed public attention on the international stage.
