Pavelski actively pursues Maple Leafs head coaching role
Insiders report the 41-year-old San Jose Sharks and Dallas Stars legend has moved from speculation to an active candidate for the franchise.

Joe Pavelski has moved beyond speculation to actively pursue the vacant head coaching position with the Toronto Maple Leafs, according to reports from NHL insiders. The 41-year-old former professional player, who spent the majority of his career with the San Jose Sharks and concluded his tenure with the Dallas Stars, has confirmed his interest in the role.
NHL insider Darren Dreger reported that Pavelski has not only been contacted by the organisation but has explicitly expressed his desire to take on the position. This development marks a shift from initial reports that described Pavelski’s emergence as a candidate as a surprising development, confirming that the former player is now a serious contender in the hiring process.
Pavelski’s coaching background is limited but present. According to insider Elliotte Friedman, the American has previously coached his son, Nate, at the youth level in Madison, Wisconsin. This experience places his potential appointment in a similar category to the Montreal Canadiens’ recent hiring of Martin St. Louis, who also transitioned from player to coach with minimal formal coaching credentials.
The Maple Leafs’ decision to consider a candidate with such limited coaching history raises questions about the criteria for the role. Pavelski, who was originally a seventh-round draft pick, retired after a career spanning 1,332 NHL games, during which he recorded 476 goals and 592 assists. Despite never playing for a Canadian-based NHL team, his extensive experience in the league is viewed by some as a potential asset in managing the high-pressure environment of Toronto.
It remains unclear what the next steps in the hiring process will be or whether Pavelski will ultimately be selected. While his playing pedigree is significant, the extent of his coaching experience beyond youth-level involvement has not been detailed. The organisation is currently evaluating candidates, with Pavelski’s active interest positioning him as a notable figure in the search.
