Patriots reshuffle backfield ahead of Colts clash

The New England Patriots have executed a roster adjustment to their running back unit, signing veteran Hassan Haskins and waiving rookie Myles Montgomery. The announcement was made on Wednesday, just 24 hours before the team’s scheduled preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts.

Haskins, a former fourth-round draft pick, brings three seasons of NFL experience to the squad. His career began with the Tennessee Titans in 2022, followed by a stint with the Los Angeles Chargers spanning the 2024 and 2025 seasons. During his most recent season with the Chargers, Haskins recorded 47 rushing yards.

Montgomery, who entered the league as an undrafted free agent this offseason, is being released with an injury designation. The rookie had played college football at Cincinnati from 2021 to 2023 before transferring to UCF for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, where he accumulated 705 rushing yards prior to entering the NFL draft process.

Haskins joins a backfield that is currently anchored by Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson. The group also includes Terrell Jennings, Lan Larison, and rookie Jam Miller, as the Patriots look to finalize their depth chart before the first week of preseason play.

The roster moves come as the team prepares for Week 1 of the preseason, where they will face the Colts on Thursday. The addition of Haskins provides the coaching staff with an experienced option in the running game, while Montgomery’s release reflects the competitive nature of the roster spots available ahead of the regular season.
