Patriots’ Henry cites Maye’s system familiarity as key to 2026 outlook
New England enter the upcoming campaign with a full offseason in the same scheme, though analysts warn of a tougher schedule and statistical regression following a 14-3 Super Bowl run.

New England Patriots tight end Hunter Henry has identified quarterback Drake Maye’s second year within the offensive system as a significant, yet often overlooked, advantage for the upcoming season. Speaking to ESPN, Henry emphasised that the scheme demands a high level of quarterback proficiency and expressed optimism regarding Maye’s potential for daily progress after completing a full offseason in the same structure.
Maye guided the Patriots to a 14-3 regular-season record and a Super Bowl appearance in 2025, throwing 31 touchdowns to just eight interceptions in his first season operating Josh McDaniels’ offence. While that performance was described as wildly successful, Henry noted that the familiarity gained from an additional year in the system could drive further development.
Despite the optimism surrounding Maye’s growth, there is an expectation of statistical regression as the team enters Year 3. Replicating a season with 31 touchdowns and only eight interceptions is viewed as challenging without elite consistency comparable to players such as Aaron Rodgers. The Patriots are anticipated to face a tougher schedule in the upcoming season, which will likely present higher-level competition for Maye.
Analysts suggest that winning 14 games in consecutive seasons is difficult, and the Patriots are expected to regress slightly from their 2025 performance. However, projections indicate the team should still be capable of securing 11 or 12 wins, maintaining their status as a playoff contender.
While the Patriots are expected to remain a playoff team, the extent of their success in the upcoming season remains uncertain. Replicating their 2025 success is viewed as difficult, but achieving a record close to those metrics would still be considered a strong season. How far the team will progress in the playoffs remains unknown.
