Patreon is laying off 20 percent of workers
Platform announces 93 job losses, marking second major restructuring in four years

Patreon has announced the termination of approximately 93 employees, representing 20 per cent of its total workforce. The reductions were first reported by 404 Media and confirmed by CEO Jack Conte in an internal memo sent to staff. The move marks the second significant workforce reduction for the creator economy platform since 2022, following a 17 per cent cut that year which also saw the closure of its Dublin and Berlin offices.

Conte clarified in the memo that the layoffs are not driven by the belief that artificial intelligence directly replaces human labour. Instead, he stated that the technology has "fundamentally transformed the tech industry," altering how the company works, builds products, communicates, and organises its operations. The restructuring is framed as a necessary adaptation to these systemic changes rather than a simple substitution of staff with automated systems.

The announcement follows comments Conte made last month during an interview on Decoder, where he outlined the company’s aggressive stance on technological integration. He described Patreon as a "product and engineering company" that is "100 per cent embracing" AI tools internally to better serve its creator base. Conte argued that these tools are essential for giving power back to creators and maintaining the platform's relevance.

The CEO issued a stark warning regarding the company’s future trajectory without such adoption. Conte stated that if Patreon fails to fully embrace AI as a core component of its product and engineering strategy, the company would be "dead in three years." This prediction underscores the urgency with which leadership is approaching the integration of new technologies into their operational and product frameworks.

This latest restructuring highlights the broader pressures facing technology firms as they navigate the rapid evolution of generative AI. By reducing its headcount while simultaneously committing to full AI integration, Patreon is signalling a strategic pivot towards a more automated and efficient operational model. The company now faces the challenge of delivering on its promise to enhance creator services while managing a significantly smaller workforce.
