Paramount Games Studio Shelves Big-Budget Avatar RPG Following Corporate Merger
Shawn Kittelsen confirms the role-playing game was not in development when Paramount and Skydance gaming divisions merged, though a future iteration remains possible.
Paramount Games Studio has confirmed that the big-budget Avatar: The Last Airbender role-playing game is no longer in production. The title, which was announced in late 2024 as the largest video game in the franchise's history, has been shelved following the structural changes within the company.
Shawn Kittelsen, senior vice president and head of creative and production at Paramount Games Studio, stated that the project was not in active development when the studio was formed. The studio was established following the merger of Paramount and Skydance’s gaming divisions, a consolidation that appears to have resulted in the cancellation of the previously announced RPG.
The cancelled game was originally pitched as an "all-new never-before-seen Avatar" experience set thousands of years before the events of the original animated series. While the narrative would have taken place in the same universe, the project was described by Paramount as the biggest video game in franchise history prior to its current status.
Kittelsen indicated to IGN that the cessation of production does not necessarily preclude future AAA Avatar titles. He suggested that a major Avatar game might still be released at some point, although it would likely arrive in a "different iteration." This comment leaves the timeline for any subsequent project unclear.
In contrast to the shelved RPG, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game continues to generate interest. The 1v1 2D fighting game has been delayed from its original July 2 release date to July 23. The title has also added Azula and Kyoshi as playable characters, drawing attention from the fighting game community and fans of the series.
