Pole-sitter Palou races to Detroit Grand Prix victory
Chip Ganassi Racing driver capitalises on pole position and caution strategy to hold off Andretti Global’s Kirkwood

Alex Palou has secured his fourth victory of the current IndyCar season, winning the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix for the second time in four years. Driving for Chip Ganassi Racing, the pole-sitter reclaimed the lead with 31 laps remaining during a full-course caution, holding off a late charge from last year’s winner, Kyle Kirkwood.

Palou, who started from the front row, pitted first during the caution period to regain the lead. He finished ahead of Kirkwood, who drives for Andretti Global, by a margin of 3.0584 seconds. Graham Rahal of Rahal Letterman Lanigan completed the podium in third place. The race on the 1.7-mile, nine-turn downtown street circuit featured seven lead changes and 173 total passes.

This result marks Palou’s second triumph at the event since the Grand Prix moved from Belle Isle to the downtown street circuit. He previously won the race in 2023 when the event returned to its current location. The downtown track is known for being notoriously bumpy and tight, having hosted the Grand Prix for the fourth time in this configuration.

Palou’s recent form has been characterised by exceptional qualifying performance. He has secured the pole position in the last three races, including the Indianapolis 500 held last week. This consistency has contributed to his four wins this season, reinforcing his standing as a leading contender in the series.

The event, originally reported by The Detroit News and published on Yahoo Sports, highlights the competitive nature of the IndyCar series. With Kirkwood having won the previous year’s race and Rahal securing a top-three finish, the field remains tightly contested as the season progresses.
