Palace target Fofana as midfield restructuring begins

Crystal Palace are evaluating a transfer for AC Milan midfielder Youssouf Fofana as the club seeks to stabilise its squad following significant personnel changes. The move is driven by the need for a physical presence in the middle of the park, particularly after the departure of Daichi Kamada and the prolonged absence of Cheick Doucoure due to long-term injury.

According to reports from Gazzetta dello Sport, the Eagles are keeping tabs on the 27-year-old France international, who has earned 25 caps for his country. AC Milan are understood to value the player at between €15 million and €20 million. Fofana has two years remaining on his contract with the Italian side, and his profile as a powerful box-to-box player aligns with the physical demands of English football.

Palace manager Pierre Sage is reportedly considering how to integrate Fofana into the team’s tactical setup. While the midfielder is known for his ability to win the ball and drive forward, he has faced criticism for decision-making in the final third. Sage may look to utilise Fofana in a more conservative defensive midfield role to mitigate these limitations, or attempt to refine his attacking output within the new system.

The urgency for midfield reinforcement is compounded by the potential departure of Adam Wharton before the transfer window closes. Palace require one or two additional bodies to maintain squad depth, and Fofana’s physical attributes make him a primary target. However, if the deal with AC Milan does not materialise, the club has identified Lens midfielder Mamadou Sangare as an alternative. The 24-year-old has a prior working relationship with Sage from their time together in France, which could facilitate a smoother tactical integration.

Concurrently, Palace are addressing defensive needs to replace outgoing captain Maxence Lacroix. The club has signed defender Chrislain Matsima and has agreed personal terms with 19-year-old Brest defender Raphael Le Guen. Despite Le Guen having made only six league appearances, Palace are prepared to submit an official offer to Brest to secure his services.
