Pacers President Pritchard Accepts Blame After Franchise Loses 2026 First-Round Selection

Kevin Pritchard, president of basketball operations for the Indiana Pacers, has issued a formal apology to supporters following the team's failure to retain its 2026 first-round draft selection. The organisation accepted full responsibility for the outcome, acknowledging that the specific risk taken in a previous asset swap resulted in the loss of the pick to the LA Clippers.

The selection was originally acquired from the Clippers in February 2025 in exchange for centre Ivica Zubac. The agreement stipulated that Indiana would hold the 2026 pick only if the team finished in the top four of the NBA draft lottery. Following a season record of 19-63, which ranked as the league's second-worst, the Pacers finished fifth in the draw, triggering the forfeiture of the asset back to California.

Pritchard addressed the situation on X, stating, "I own taking this risk. Surprised it came up 5th after this year. I thought we were due some luck." He noted that while the outcome was unexpected given the team's performance, the primary objective remained securing a starting centre to compete with the league's elite franchises in the coming season.

The trade mechanics involved sending two first-round picks to the Clippers, one of which was the 2026 selection contingent on a top-four finish. Had Indiana landed outside the top four, the alternative asset would have been an unprotected first-round pick in 2031. The Washington Wizards, who finished with the league's worst record of 17-65, secured the No. 1 overall pick, ending a seven-year drought for the franchise.

The acquisition of Zubac was driven by a critical need at the centre position following the departure of Myles Turner to the Milwaukee Bucks. Zubac is currently under contract with significant salary obligations, owing $20.3 million for the 2026-27 season and $21.7 million for 2027-28 before becoming an unrestricted free agent.

As the organisation looks toward the future, management expressed hope for a rebound in performance with a healthy Tyrese Haliburton. The star guard missed the entire 2025-26 campaign due to a torn Achilles suffered in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, leaving the team without its primary playmaker for the duration of the season.
