Oura’s New Ring 5 Is Smaller and Lighter—and Adds an AI Health Coach
Finnish health tech firm targets proactive wellness market with smaller wearable and integrated medical guidance

Finnish health technology company Oura has launched the Ring 5, a new smart ring designed to compete directly with screenless fitness trackers such as the Fitbit Air. The device represents a significant shift in form factor, measuring 6.09 mm wide and 2.28 mm thick, which Oura states is 40 per cent smaller and lighter than its predecessor, the Ring 4. The company claims this makes the Ring 5 the world’s smallest smart ring, addressing long-standing consumer feedback regarding the bulk of previous iterations.

Hardware improvements include a titanium exterior coated with a physical vapor deposition layer to enhance scratch resistance. The ring carries an IP68 rating, making it dustproof and water-resistant up to 100 meters. Internally, Oura has reengineered the sensors to sit closer to the skin and integrated LEDs that are four times more powerful than previous models. The device utilises 12 independent signal pathways to improve tracking accuracy across various finger shapes and skin tones, with battery life extended to six or nine days per charge.

The software architecture positions the Ring 5 as a proactive health platform, heavily utilising artificial intelligence. Central to this is Oura Advisor, a large-language-model assistant that now integrates with Counsel Health. This partnership allows users to receive AI-assisted health guidance and connect with licensed physicians directly through the app. The system aims to provide personalised insights, moving beyond passive data collection to active health management.

Preventive health monitoring has been expanded through a feature called Health Radar. This tool continuously analyses biometric patterns to flag subtle changes before they become apparent issues. Key additions include Blood Pressure Signals, which monitors cardiovascular strain and tracks whether blood pressure drops appropriately during sleep, and Nighttime Breathing, which provides a rolling 30-day view of breathing disturbances. Oura has also partnered with Resmed to offer sleep health resources and provider connections for users with elevated breathing alerts.

Metabolic health tracking is another focus, with new tools designed for users on GLP-1 medications. These features allow individuals to log dosing schedules, track side effects, and monitor weight changes. The device also supports Lab Uploads, enabling users to import blood test results and compare biomarkers over time. In the United States, subscribers can connect eligible providers to import diagnosed conditions and medications into a Personal Health Record within the app.

The Ring 5 is available for preorder immediately in sizes 6 through 13, with shipping scheduled to commence on 4 June. Standard silver and black models are priced at $399, while premium finishes including Stealth, Brushed Silver, updated Gold, and new Deep Rose are available for $499. The optional portable Charging Case, which supports wireless charging and adds approximately five full charges, is priced at $99.

Oura’s subscription service remains unchanged at $6 per month or $70 annually. The device, charging case, and membership qualify for Health Savings Account and Flexible Spending Account reimbursement in the US. The company has also introduced a time-based Data Deletion feature, allowing users to erase data from specific periods without losing long-term history, alongside granular controls over data sharing with third parties.
