Oregon ends Nebraska’s Big Ten title bid with dominant shutout victory
Will Sanford’s pitching performance stifles Husker offence, securing Oregon’s place in the Big Ten Tournament final while Nebraska looks ahead to NCAA tournament hosting duties.

Oregon has defeated Nebraska 8-0 in the Big Ten Tournament final, effectively ending the Huskers’ campaign and halting their pursuit of a third consecutive tournament title. The victory, secured at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, also concluded a two-year and two-day winless streak for Nebraska at the venue, marking a significant shift in momentum for the conference competition.
The game was defined by Oregon’s pitching dominance, particularly from starter Will Sanford. Sanford struck out 12 batters over six innings, replicating a dominant performance the two teams had seen earlier in the season in Eugene. His rising fastball proved difficult for the Nebraska lineup to handle, as the Huskers recorded 12 strikeouts and failed to score any runs throughout the contest.
Nebraska’s starting pitcher, Gavin Blachowicz, initially kept the game competitive, striking out nine batters and allowing only three runs on six hits and one walk before exiting after the fifth inning. However, Oregon’s offence began to pull away in the fourth inning when Maddox Maloney hit a solo home run. Maloney, who ranks third in career home runs at Oregon, extended the lead further in the fifth with another solo shot, putting the Ducks ahead 3-0.
Nebraska’s offence, typically potent with high on-base rates for leadoff hitters, struggled significantly with runners in scoring position, managing just one hit in nine attempts. The Huskers hit into two double plays, including a pivotal defensive stop in the sixth inning where a 103 mph line drive from Dylan Carey was caught by a shifted Oregon shortstop, resulting in a double play that ended a scoring threat.
Oregon added runs in the seventh and ninth innings to seal the 8-0 victory. The Ducks will now advance to face regular season champion UCLA for the Big Ten Tournament championship on Sunday at 2pm CDT. Meanwhile, Nebraska is expected to secure a regional host spot for the upcoming NCAA tournament, with the selection show scheduled for Monday at 11am CDT.
