Oracle bans AI-generated code from OpenJDK amid $70bn expansion and credit downgrade

Oracle has prohibited the submission of AI-generated code to the OpenJDK project, citing concerns over safety, security, and intellectual property risks. The open-source Java project steward clarified that while developers may utilise large language models privately for debugging and code review, they are barred from submitting AI-generated material to repositories, pull requests, or other official project channels.
This external restriction stands in sharp contrast to the company’s internal operations. Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison has stated that AI models now write the company’s code, while co-CEO Mike Sicilia credited AI tools with enabling smaller engineering teams to deliver results faster. The divergence highlights a distinct separation between how the corporation manages AI integration within its own walls versus its stewardship of public open-source infrastructure.
The policy announcement coincides with significant financial shifts for the Austin-based technology corporation. Oracle is currently investing $70 billion in datacentre expansion this year, a capital-intensive move aimed at scaling its infrastructure capabilities.
