OpenAI launches new Codex tools for white-collar work
AI lab releases job-specific tools for white-collar workers as knowledge worker usage surges

OpenAI has expanded its Codex platform with a suite of enterprise-focused tools, signalling a decisive shift toward courting white-collar professionals and institutional clients. The latest update introduces six job-specific plugins designed for data analytics, creative production, sales, product design, equity investing, and investment banking. These tools bundle integrations, instructions, and context to approximate specific professional roles, aiming to deliver immediate utility for knowledge workers.

The release coincides with an internal report from OpenAI highlighting rapid adoption among non-developer users. The company stated that Codex now boasts more than 5 million weekly active users, a figure that has increased more than sixfold since the desktop application launched in February. While software developers remain the largest demographic, knowledge workers now comprise approximately 20 percent of the user base, with this segment growing more than three times as fast as other groups.

To facilitate deeper integration into business workflows, OpenAI introduced a 'Sites' feature that allows Codex to output work as hosted interactive websites. This capability relies on partnerships with firms including Wix, Base44, Replit, Lovable, Figma, and Emergent. The company also launched an 'Annotations' feature, enabling users to designate specific sections of a document for precise commands and context operations, addressing common challenges in document processing.

This product expansion follows the establishment of the OpenAI Deployment Company, a joint venture backed by more than $4 billion in funding from global investment firms. The venture aims to integrate OpenAI tools more deeply into global business infrastructure, addressing the logistical hurdles of enterprise adoption. OpenAI Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser noted that the primary challenge now lies in helping companies integrate these systems into the existing infrastructure and workflows that power their businesses.

The move marks a significant evolution for OpenAI, which historically maintained a consumer focus. Plugin support for Codex was only introduced in March, and the company is now competing directly with rivals such as Anthropic, which launched its Enterprise Agents program in February and released finance-oriented agents in May. The new tools are designed to be effective out of the box, though OpenAI acknowledged that effectiveness will increase with user customization.
