OpenAI targets 2027 for first major hardware launch, a screenless smart speaker

OpenAI is preparing to release its first significant hardware device, a screenless smart speaker scheduled for launch in 2027, according to reports from Bloomberg. The device is designed to facilitate voice interaction through OpenAI’s GPT-Live model, which was announced last week, while offering capabilities such as smart home controls, media playback, and messaging.

The hardware will not include a display but will instead utilise a camera and additional sensors to interpret the user’s environment. Bloomberg reports that the speaker will incorporate mechanical elements capable of independent movement, a design choice intended to foster a more human-like connection with users. Additionally, the device will feature a rechargeable battery, allowing for portability beyond a fixed location.

The announcement arrives amidst heightened legal tensions between OpenAI and Apple. The tech giant recently filed a lawsuit alleging that OpenAI stole hardware secrets. In a statement on Tuesday, OpenAI dismissed the complaint, stating it was not aware of any evidence to support the allegations. This legal backdrop follows OpenAI’s acquisition of Jony Ive’s design firm, io Products, for nearly $6.5 billion, with the new speaker being developed in collaboration with the design team.

This smart speaker represents the initial step in a broader hardware strategy. Bloomberg indicates that OpenAI is planning a lineup of approximately five devices. Alongside the 2027 speaker, the company is currently teasing a separate gadget known as the Codex Micro, developed in partnership with Work Louder, which is scheduled for release on July 15.
