OpenAI reportedly fast-tracking smartphone for early 2027 mass production

OpenAI is reportedly accelerating plans to enter the hardware market with a smartphone, a move that would mark a significant shift for the artificial intelligence firm. According to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the project has been fast-tracked for mass production, with a target start date in early 2027. This development suggests the company is pivoting from earlier speculation regarding a bespoke gadget designed by Jony Ive toward a conventional smartphone form factor.
The device is expected to rely on a customised version of the MediaTek Dimensity 9600 processor. This chip is anticipated to launch this autumn, succeeding the current Dimensity 9500 which powers devices such as the Vivo X300 Pro and Oppo Find X9 Pro. The custom silicon will reportedly feature an enhanced image signal processor with improved HDR capabilities, designed to boost real-world visual sensing for the phone.
Beyond the processor, the hardware specifications include LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage to ensure high-speed performance. A key component of the build is a dual-NPU architecture, which Kuo states is engineered to handle simultaneous AI tasks, such as processing both language and vision data concurrently. This focus on on-device AI computation aligns with the company's broader strategy to integrate its models directly into consumer hardware.

Kuo projects that combined shipments for the 2027 and 2028 period could reach approximately 30 million units.
