ChatGPT can now send texts for you with new Apple Messages plugin

OpenAI has launched a new Apple Messages plugin for ChatGPT, enabling users to connect their Messages inbox directly to the chatbot. The integration allows users to sort, analyse, edit, and search their message history, as well as draft and send texts on their behalf.

The plugin is also compatible with Codex and ChatGPT Work, extending its utility to professional use cases beyond personal communication. A brief commercial demonstrating the feature shows a user asking the chatbot to suggest follow-up messages to contacts based on communications received the previous day.

Privacy considerations remain central to the launch, as connecting a Messages inbox to an AI lab invites scrutiny over data handling. OpenAI stated to Bloomberg that the plugin runs locally on the user’s machine and does not create an index of all messages. However, the specific technical implications of this local processing are not immediately clear, and further clarification from the company is pending.

To mitigate risks associated with automated sending, OpenAI advises users to review messages before they are dispatched. The company specifically discourages turning on persistent approval, warning that doing so removes the final opportunity to review a message before ChatGPT sends it as the user.

The launch positions OpenAI to deepen its integration with Apple’s ecosystem, offering a tool that automates routine digital correspondence while navigating the ongoing debate over AI privacy.
