OpenAI has officially released the Codex Micro, a physical keypad designed to interface with its agentic coding feature, Codex. Developed in collaboration with keyboard manufacturer Work Louder, the device is now available for order at a price of $230. The release marks the company’s first confirmed hardware product, arriving ahead of more speculative projects that have faced regulatory and legal headwinds.

The keypad features six frosted keys equipped with status LEDs to monitor agent activity, alongside additional keys that users can assign to specific actions such as accepting or rejecting code, branching threads, or activating voice input. Hardware controls include a dial for adjusting the reasoning levels utilized by Codex and a joystick for navigating between different workflows. The device is fully customisable and includes additional keycaps to allow for user-defined controls.

This hardware release coincides with a broader restructuring of OpenAI’s software ecosystem. The company recently consolidated its offerings into a "super app" that integrates the standard ChatGPT interface, the Codex coding tool, and a new productivity-focused agent known as ChatGPT Work. While these applications remain accessible via standard input methods, the Codex Micro is positioned to provide a more streamlined experience for dedicated users managing complex agentic tasks.

The launch of the Codex Micro stands in contrast to other hardware initiatives currently under development at OpenAI. Rumours persist regarding a smart speaker project, reportedly involving former Apple designer Jony Ive, which is expected to launch later this year. However, that project faces significant complications due to an ongoing lawsuit from Apple, which alleges that Tang Yew Tan and Chang Liu, current OpenAI employees and former Apple staff, misappropriated trade secrets.

Work Louder’s online store indicates that stock of the Codex Micro is limited, with availability subject to supply constraints. The device can be purchased directly through OpenAI or Work Louder. Previous collaborations by Work Louder include the Creator Micro 2 and the Framer Micro, establishing a precedent for niche hardware accessories tailored to specific software ecosystems.
