OpenAI deploys optional AI-generated companions for Codex coding interface

These companions function as a floating overlay within the interface, displaying the active coding thread and notifying users of task completion or the need for input. The feature is currently accessible on both Windows and macOS versions of the Codex app.

The primary utility of these companions lies in their ability to keep developers informed without requiring them to switch away from their current open application. While the pets do not perform coding tasks themselves, they serve as a visual indicator of the agentic tool's activity. Users can summon or dismiss the overlay by typing the "/pet" command directly into the Codex app.

In terms of variety, the platform currently offers eight built-in pets for users to select from. Beyond these pre-set options, the system allows for the generation of custom companions using the "/hatch" command. Early adopters have already utilised this capability to upload numerous custom options, including variations resembling Microsoft's former assistant, Clippy.

OpenAI has likened the new feature to the legacy of Clippy but emphasises that these pets are designed to be useful rather than intrusive.
