Air quality indices reach dangerous levels in New York and Minnesota, prompting warnings from medical experts and climate researchers.

More than 100 wildfires are currently burning out of control across Ontario, Canada, generating smoke that has drifted more than 1,000 miles to blanket the US Midwest and Northeast. The event, exacerbated by a concurrent heatwave with temperatures exceeding 90 degrees Fahrenheit in many areas, has triggered air quality warnings across the region. On Wednesday evening, the US Environmental Protection Agency recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 180 in New York City, classifying the air as unhealthy, while Duluth, Minnesota, saw readings surpass 500, entering hazardous territory.

The smoke contains PM2.5, microscopic particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers that can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream. Nicholas Nassikas, an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, advised patients with preexisting conditions such as asthma to limit outdoor exposure. He noted that children are particularly vulnerable due to faster breathing rates, while the elderly face heightened risks from compounding health issues and potentially poor ventilation in care facilities. Jennifer Stowell, an assistant professor at the University of Maryland’s School of Public Health, recommended that even healthy adults limit time outdoors when AQI levels exceed 100 and wear N95 masks if prolonged outdoor activity is necessary.

The composition of the smoke presents unique challenges beyond standard particulate matter. As fires encroach on towns, they burn homes, vehicles, and other non-natural structures, creating what experts describe as a toxic soup of pollutants. While N95 masks filter some particulate matter, they do not fully remove gaseous pollutants present in this type of smoke. Dan Westervelt, an associate professor of climate physics at Columbia University, highlighted that while air conditioners can help, cooling centres must also prioritise clean air filtration to serve as safe havens during these dual crises of heat and poor air quality.

Climate change is extending wildfire seasons and creating hotter, drier conditions that fuel more explosive fires. A study published last year estimated that wildfire smoke causes 40,000 deaths annually in the US, a figure projected to more than double to 70,000 by 2050 if warming trends continue. Westervelt warned that frequent exposure to high levels of air pollution can significantly reduce life expectancy, noting that wildfire smoke has become the primary remaining challenge for US air quality after decades of success in reducing emissions from vehicles and power plants.

New York City has responded to the combined heat and air quality crisis by opening cooling centres and distributing masks at some locations. However, experts caution that these measures may be insufficient if air purifiers are not prioritised. A similar smoke event affected the Northeast in 2023, and smoky conditions are expected to worsen in parts of the region, including New York, on Thursday. As research into the long-term health impacts of prolonged smoke exposure continues to develop, the increasing frequency of such events underscores the urgent need for adaptation strategies.
