Swedish footwear manufacturer scales up South Korean production for new bioplastic running shoe

Swedish footwear manufacturer On Running has released the LightSpray Cloudmonster 3 Hyper, a laceless running shoe designed to compete in the ultralight performance segment. Priced at US$280 and weighing just 190 grams, the shoe features a bioplastic upper sprayed directly onto the foot by a robot, paired with a Cloudmonster sole. The product marks the second iteration of On’s sprayed-on technology, following the limited release of the Cloudboom Strike LS.

The launch occurs within a highly competitive market where rivals such as Adidas and Nike are aggressively pursuing weight reduction for long-distance athletes. Adidas recently garnered attention when runners in its ultralight, carbon-fiber-plated shoes broke three world records. On Running, now a US$3 billion enterprise known for its distinctive aesthetic, is positioning its Cloudmonster line as a key growth area. The company recently announced a broader strategy to expand this family, introducing baseline and Hyper versions alongside the new LightSpray model.

The LightSpray Cloudmonster 3 Hyper is constructed from only eight pieces, including a thin upper frame. It represents a price reduction from the previous iteration’s US$330 price point. The shoe’s bioplastic membrane adjusts to provide a snug fit, eliminating the need for laces. While the stretchy sides offer stability during runs, the casing molds closely to the toes, which may require an adjustment period for users accustomed to traditional toebox space.

Currently, the shoe is available with limited supply, and not all sizes are in stock. On Running is scaling up manufacturing in South Korea to address these availability issues, with the company hoping to resolve supply constraints later this year. The firm noted that future price reductions are possible as production increases, though this is not guaranteed.

On Running’s Cloudmonster line has seen particular success compared to other product types. The Cloudmonster 3 Hyper is a souped-up version of the baseline model, featuring a foamier bottom for enhanced padding. While the Cloudmonster soles are noted to be less squishy than the Cloudboom versions, they provide a noticeable spring and improved grip on wet or uneven surfaces. The company aims to balance the lightweight design with sufficient stability for runners.
