Ole Miss Deploys Walker Hooks in Crucial College World Series Matchup Against North Carolina
Walker Hooks, a sophomore left-hander with nine saves this season, takes the mound at Charles Schwab Field as Ole Miss faces North Carolina in the first meeting between the programmes in 57 years.

Ole Miss baseball has called upon sophomore left-hander Walker Hooks to stabilise a tense seventh inning during their College World Series contest against North Carolina on June 12. Hooks entered the game at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska, relieving Hudson Calhoun with the Rebels holding a 2-1 advantage and two runners on base with no outs.
The matchup marks a significant historical juncture, representing the first time North Carolina and Ole Miss have faced each other in the College World Series in 57 years. North Carolina arrives as the No. 5 seed with a record of 50-12-1, while Ole Miss competes with a 41-21 record. The game was broadcast on ESPN, drawing attention to the strategic deployment of Hooks in high-leverage situations.
Hooks has established himself as the primary closer for the Rebels this season. His 2026 statistics include a 3-1 record, a 2.43 earned run average, and nine saves. His performance has been recognised nationally, earning him a spot on the Perfect Game second-team All-American squad for college baseball.
The decision to utilise Hooks in this capacity follows his successful workload during the super regional against Auburn. In that series, Hooks pitched three total innings across two games, allowing an earned run in each but securing the save in both instances. This demonstrates his capacity to handle multiple innings and maintain effectiveness under pressure.
Ole Miss has demonstrated consistent success when deploying Hooks in the NCAA Tournament. The Rebels have secured a win in all three tournament games in which Hooks has pitched. As a second-year college baseball player, Hooks is currently not eligible for the draft, allowing him to focus on his development within the collegiate structure.
Hooks hails from Brandon, Mississippi, and attended Brandon High School. His emergence as a key reliever has been a notable component of Ole Miss’s tournament run, providing the team with a reliable option in late-game scenarios. The outcome of the June 12 contest remains to be determined, with further games in the series scheduled for subsequent days.
