Oklahoma locks in Brent Venables with six-year extension as Sooners target 2026 titles
The Sooners have secured their head coach’s future following a College Football Playoff run, with the athletic director citing the need for institutional stability and continuity.
Oklahoma has signed head coach Brent Venables to a six-year contract extension, a move the university describes as essential for maintaining stability within the football programme. The agreement was announced on Thursday, shortly before the start of the 2026 season, following the team’s recent appearance in the College Football Playoff.
Under the new terms, Venables will earn $10 million for the current season. His salary will increase by $200,000 in each of the subsequent five years. Oklahoma athletic director Roger Denny stated that finalising the extension was a top priority during his first months in the role, with the process beginning shortly after the Sooners secured their playoff berth.
Denny emphasised the importance of continuity as the team aims for championships in 2026. He praised Venables for the culture he has built and the structure in place around the programme, noting that the coach represents the university with passion and authenticity. The extension adds two years to Venables’ current contract, providing the administrative framework needed to pursue sustained success.
Venables arrives at this crossroads with a 32-20 record over his first four seasons at Oklahoma. His tenure has been characterised by an alternation between six-win and 10-win campaigns. In the 2025 season, the Sooners finished with a 10-win regular season, securing a playoff spot after consecutive victories over ranked opponents Alabama, Tennessee, and Missouri. However, the team lost to Alabama in the first round of the College Football Playoff, blowing a 17-0 lead at home.
For the 2026 campaign, the Sooners will return 14 starters, a figure tied for the second-most in the Football Bowl Subdivision. This roster continuity includes quarterback John Mateer, who has reportedly revamped his throwing mechanics, and a defensive unit that Venables considers among the best in the country. The coaching staff has also identified improving the running game as a major priority, after the team ranked 112th nationally in rushing yards per game in the previous season.
The upcoming schedule presents significant challenges, with road games against No. 16 Michigan and No. 3 Georgia scheduled by the end of September, followed by a home fixture against No. 5 Texas. Venables will need to demonstrate greater consistency to justify his eight-figure salary, particularly as he seeks to win his first postseason game with the Sooners.
