Ohio State secures top pocket passer for 2028 recruiting class
Christopher Vargas commits to Columbus, joining Jett Harrison and Jameer Whyce in a class that now leads the FBS.
Ohio State has secured the commitment of four-star quarterback Christopher Vargas, ESPN’s top-ranked pocket passer in the 2028 recruiting cycle. The 6-foot-4 prospect from Lawrence, Massachusetts, is ranked as the No. 14 overall recruit in the class and announced his pledge via social media on Saturday afternoon.
Vargas, a two-year starter at Saint John’s Prep in Danvers, Massachusetts, completed 66.7 per cent of his passes for 2,038 yards and 24 touchdowns against three interceptions during his sophomore season last autumn. His decision follows significant interest from a group of programs including Auburn, Boston College, Miami, Oregon, Texas A&M, USC, Virginia Tech and Washington.
With Vargas in the fold, Ohio State now holds pledges from four of ESPN’s top 100 prospects in the 2028 cycle, the highest count among any FBS program. He arrives as the second-ranked member of the Buckeyes’ 2028 class, trailing only wide receiver Jett Harrison, who is ranked No. 6 overall. Harrison is the son of Super Bowl XLI champion Marvin Harrison and the younger brother of former Ohio State All-American Marvin Harrison Jr.
The 2028 class also includes in-state defensive tackle Jameer Whyce, ranked No. 16 overall, and four-star running back Elijah Newman-Hall, ranked No. 90. Vargas cannot sign a national letter of intent until December 2027.
Ohio State’s 2027 recruiting class currently sits at No. 7 in ESPN’s rankings, headlined by commitments from four of the nation’s top 15 prospects. The Buckeyes also hold a pledge from four-star quarterback Brady Edmunds, ranked No. 173 overall, in the 2027 cycle. Vargas is one of six ESPN Junior 300 quarterbacks to commit since June 1, joining commitments to Penn State, Texas, Alabama, Indiana, Oklahoma and Georgia.
