Norwich set for first city centre half-marathon in three decades
EPIC Norfolk will host a 21km race on Red Lion Street next May, aiming to broaden participation beyond the region's established 10km events.
Norwich is set to host its first city centre half-marathon since 1993, according to organisers. EPIC Norfolk, a not-for-profit body active across Norfolk and Suffolk, will stage the inaugural 21km event on bank holiday Monday, 3 May next year.
The race will start and finish on Red Lion Street, with a route that passes significant local landmarks including Norwich Castle, Norwich Cathedral, Norwich Market, and the Theatre Royal. Organisers describe the course as a 13.1-mile challenge designed to integrate with the city's existing sporting calendar.
Steven Hitcham of EPIC Norfolk stated that the event is intended to complement the 10km Run Norwich, which currently takes place in August. By scheduling the half-marathon for May, the organisation aims to provide a distinct seasonal option for participants.
Hitcham noted that half-marathons represent a specific niche for the group, which also specialises in providing sporting opportunities for older people, those with dementia, and adults with disabilities. He argued that the distance offers a manageable training target for new runners, presenting a less daunting prospect than a full marathon.
The initiative also seeks to capitalise on the significant growth of social running groups in the region. Hitcham indicated that the event is designed to be inclusive, with the goal of creating a race that the wider community of Norwich actively anticipates and enjoys.
The announcement follows a period of increased interest in local running events, with EPIC Norfolk positioning this new addition as a key development for the city's athletic infrastructure.
