Northwestern men’s basketball 2026-27 roster preview
Head coach Chris Collins rebuilds programme with zero four-year players remaining

Northwestern University men’s basketball has finalised a comprehensive roster reconstruction for the 2026-27 season under head coach Chris Collins, marking a distinct departure from the programme’s traditional identity. Following the departure of nine players to the transfer portal, the squad now features zero four-year Northwestern players, relying instead on seven transfer additions, three returning Wildcats, two incoming recruits, and one local walk-on.

The new roster is anchored by significant incoming talent, including Jack Karasinski from Bellarmine, Colin Smith from UCSB, Okku Federiko from Drake, LA Pratt from Northeastern, and Luke McEldon from Mount St. Mary’s. This influx of external players is designed to support a projected strategic shift towards a position-less, high-volume three-point shooting offence, aiming to replace the scrappy, gritty upperclassmen forwards that defined the team in recent years.

Key returning figures include sophomore guard Jake West, who is expected to orchestrate the offence, and junior Angelo Ciaravino, the longest-tenured Wildcat on the current roster. Ciaravino is tasked with providing stability and helping integrate the abundance of new faces into the programme’s culture, while West is encouraged to increase his scoring volume following his performance in the Big Ten Tournament.

The coaching staff has also secured high-profile recruits, notably Jayden Hodge, who was ranked as the No. 79 recruit in the country by 247 Sports before suffering an ACL tear. Hodge’s availability remains uncertain, but he represents a potential athletic asset alongside other first-year players like Elijah Eschmeyer, the local walk-on, and Symon Ghai, a seven-foot forward with long-term developmental potential.

Despite the offensive upgrades, significant concerns remain regarding defensive athleticism and physicality within the competitive Big Ten conference. Analysts note that several incoming transfers posted negative defensive ratings in their previous seasons, raising questions about the team’s ability to match the physical standards of the conference. The programme enters this transition year with high offensive upside but faces the challenge of building cohesion without institutional continuity.
