Nintendo advances Legend of Zelda film release to April 2027
The live-action feature, distributed by Sony Pictures with streaming rights held by Netflix, will now premiere on April 30, 2027.

Nintendo has officially shifted the worldwide theatrical release date for its live-action The Legend of Zelda film forward to April 30, 2027. The adjustment moves the premiere one week earlier than the previously scheduled date of May 7, 2027. Shigeru Miyamoto, the company’s executive and creator of the franchise, confirmed the change via X, stating that the production team is advancing its work to deliver the film sooner than originally planned.
The announcement comes as Nintendo continues to expand its presence in the film industry, following the strong box office performance of its recent Mario-related titles. Miyamoto noted on social media that the team is united in accelerating production to bring the movie to audiences even one day earlier. He acknowledged that it is less than a year until release and urged patience from fans as the final product nears completion.
Directed by Wes Ball, the film stars Benjamin Evan Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Zelda. First looks at the cast were released in November of the previous year, depicting Link in his iconic green attire and Zelda in blue clothing reminiscent of Breath of the Wild. The specific timeline of the film relative to the game series remains unclear, though industry observers note that 2026 marks the 40th anniversary of the franchise, which originated on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986.
Sony Pictures serves as the theatrical distributor for the project. Following its cinema run, the film will be available for exclusive streaming on Netflix. The streaming giant secured these rights through an agreement signed with Sony Pictures in early 2026, ensuring that the title will be available to subscribers immediately after its theatrical window closes.
While Nintendo has not provided a specific reason for the date change, industry speculation suggests the move may be intended to avoid competition with other major releases. Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter is currently scheduled for a May 28, 2027, launch. A late April debut would allow The Legend of Zelda film to occupy the box office independently for a longer period, although this remains unconfirmed by the studio.
