Ninja Theory announces 'Senua', a 2027 action-adventure sequel to the Hellblade series
Revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase, the title features a map twice the size of its predecessor and will launch on Xbox, PC, and PlayStation 5.

Ninja Theory has officially announced 'Senua', a new action-adventure title serving as a sequel to the Hellblade series. The studio revealed the project during the Xbox Games Showcase, confirming a scheduled release in 2027. The game will launch on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox on PC, Steam, and PS5, with inclusion in the Game Pass library at launch.
Development on the title commenced in September 2024, shortly after Ninja Theory shipped the previous entry in the franchise. According to studio head Dom Matthews, the decision to simply title the game 'Senua' reflects a deliberate shift in direction. Matthews described the project as a "different style of game" that aims to add to the foundation established by the first two entries by incorporating elements expected from a premium action-adventure title.
The announcement highlights significant expansions in gameplay scope. Ninja Theory described 'Senua' as a "full-on action-adventure" featuring expanded combat mechanics and an increased number of puzzles. While the narrative remains linear, the game offers greater freedom to explore. The in-game map is approximately twice the size of the map found in Hellblade II.
The story is set in purgatory and takes place after the events of the first two Hellblade games. A trailer released alongside the announcement depicted the protagonist engaging in combat against multiple enemies. The visual presentation included scenes of the character being drenched in a substance described as "liquid gold," though specific narrative context for this element was not provided in the source material.
Matthews noted that while the previous games delivered on specific intentions, this new project represents an additive approach. The studio aims to blend the established tone of the series with the broader expectations of the action-adventure genre. The title is currently targeted for a 2027 release window, although an exact date has not yet been specified.
