NHL commissioner explores Texas expansion as deadline reshuffles roster balance
Commissioner Gary Bettman confirms expansion talks while multiple clubs execute significant trades and coaching appointments ahead of the draft.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has confirmed that the league is actively exploring the addition of a second franchise in Texas, with Austin and Houston identified as potential target cities. The announcement followed a board of governors meeting, signalling a continued push for geographic expansion within the United States market.
Concurrent with the expansion discussions, the Edmonton Oilers have appointed Mike Babcock as their head coach. The NHL noted that while it found no basis to prevent the hiring, it expects a certain level of decorum and conduct from Babcock, referencing past controversies associated with his tenure.
The trade deadline period saw significant asset movement across the league. The New Jersey Devils acquired two conditional first-round picks, a 2026 second-round selection, and defenseman Etienne Morin from the Calgary Flames in exchange for Simon Nemec and Maxim Tsyplakov. The Athletic noted the move allows the Devils to avoid a risky contract while acquiring currency to add top-six winger help.
In other major transactions, the Washington Capitals acquired forward Jordan Kyrou from the St Louis Blues, sending Connor McMichael, Milton Gastrin, and their 16th overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft to St Louis. The Chicago Blackhawks acquired defenceman Bowen Byram and forward Jordan Greenway from the Buffalo Sabres, sending Chicago’s fourth overall pick and the New York Islanders’ 45th overall pick to Buffalo.
The San Jose Sharks acquired forwards William Eklund, Kasper Halttunen, and Brandon Svoboda from the Florida Panthers in exchange for Florida’s ninth overall pick in the 2026 draft. Meanwhile, reports indicate that Morgan Rielly’s agent has submitted a list of four Western-based teams the defenceman is willing to join, suggesting further roster instability in the coming months.
