Major roster shifts signal a new era of quarterback-wide receiver pairings across the league

The 2026 NFL offseason has precipitated a substantial restructuring of offensive rosters, with multiple franchises establishing new quarterback-wide receiver pairings through trades, free agency, and the draft. According to an analysis by CBS Sports, the New England Patriots have drawn particular attention for acquiring three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles to pair with quarterback Drake Maye. This move positions the Patriots, who finished as the defending AFC champions, with a high-profile target for Maye, who finished as the 2025 NFL MVP runner-up.

Other notable personnel shifts include the Denver Broncos signing Jaylen Waddle from the Miami Dolphins to join Bo Nix, and the Buffalo Bills acquiring DJ Moore from the Chicago Bears to pair with Josh Allen. The Las Vegas Raiders selected Indiana Hoosiers quarterback Fernando Mendoza first overall in the 2026 NFL Draft, aiming to rebuild the franchise under new head coach Klint Kubiak. The Raiders also plan to feature Mendoza alongside wide receiver Tre Tucker, who led the team in receiving yards in 2025.

The Philadelphia Eagles, having traded Brown, shifted their offensive strategy by drafting USC wide receiver Makai Lemon 20th overall. Quarterback Jalen Hurts, who recorded one of his worst statistical seasons in 2025, will now work with Lemon under new playcaller Sean Mannion, who previously served as quarterbacks coach for the Green Bay Packers. This coaching change aims to address reported offensive discontent in Philadelphia and provide Hurts with a fresh start.

In the Western Conference, the Minnesota Vikings signed quarterback Kyler Murray in free agency, replacing J.J. McCarthy. Murray is expected to pair with wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who recorded career lows in receiving yards and touchdowns in 2025 under McCarthy. The San Francisco 49ers also bolstered their offense by adding six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Mike Evans to quarterback Brock Purdy’s roster, hoping to restore health and productivity to a unit that has seen significant success under Kyle Shanahan.

Additional new duos include Aaron Rodgers and Michael Pittman Jr. with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Tyler Shough and Jordyn Tyson with the New Orleans Saints, and Cam Ward and Carnell Tate with the Tennessee Titans. The Titans selected Tate fourth overall in the 2026 NFL Draft, aiming to provide Ward with a dynamic deep threat after a rocky rookie season. These collective moves underscore a league-wide emphasis on stabilising quarterback play through targeted receiver acquisitions and strategic draft selections.
