NFL finalises 2026 calendar with record international slate and streaming shifts

The National Football League has officially released the complete 272-game schedule for the 2026 regular season, confirming a calendar that prioritises international expansion and extended holiday viewing windows. The announcement finalises the league’s programming strategy for the upcoming year, detailing specific dates, times, and broadcast partners for all fixtures.

The season will commence on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, at Lumen Field, where the Seattle Seahawks will host the New England Patriots. This matchup serves as a rematch of Super Bowl LX and marks the first time since 2016 that the regular-season opener features a repeat of the previous year’s championship participants. The opening game is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on NBC and Peacock.

A significant structural shift in the 2026 calendar is the inclusion of a record nine international matches. These games will be staged across seven countries: Australia, Brazil, France, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Spain. This expansion underscores the league’s continued strategic focus on global markets, integrating overseas fixtures into the domestic schedule without disrupting the traditional home-and-away balance for participating teams.

The holiday schedule has also been formalised with expanded content. The league will feature a game on Thanksgiving Eve, with the Los Angeles Rams hosting the Green Bay Packers in a Wednesday night fixture broadcast on Netflix. This addition extends the holiday viewing window prior to the primary Thanksgiving Day matches. The calendar further includes a game on Christmas Eve and a tripleheader on Christmas Day, ensuring consistent programming through the end of the year.

Broadcasting rights for the season have been confirmed across multiple platforms. Games broadcast on CBS will stream on Paramount+, while fixtures from NFL Network, Fox, NBC, ABC, and ESPN will be available on fubo. The full week-by-week schedule includes specific bye weeks for teams such as Cincinnati, Detroit, Miami, and Minnesota. However, the matchups for the Saturday tripleheader and Sunday primetime game in Week 18 will not be determined until January.
