Newcastle United have secured the long-term future of winger Harvey Barnes, with the England international signing a new contract extension ahead of the upcoming Premier League season. The 28-year-old, who joined the club from Leicester City in 2023, had two years remaining on his previous deal before committing his future to St James’ Park.
The decision to extend his stay comes as Newcastle navigate a period of significant squad turnover. The retention of Barnes serves as a stabilising factor following reported departures of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham earlier in the close season. The club is also reportedly seeking to retain captain Bruno Guimaraes amid interest from Arsenal.
Barnes’s move had been linked with a potential transfer to Aston Villa, who were seeking new attacking options after selling Morgan Rogers to Chelsea. However, the winger has chosen to remain with the Magpies, citing his satisfaction with the club’s environment and his role within the team.
Manager Eddie Howe praised the player’s consistency and quality over his three years at the club. Howe described the new contract as well-deserved, highlighting Barnes’s ability to produce special moments at vital times and noting his vast experience at the highest level.
Statistically, Barnes has been a productive asset for Newcastle, scoring 16 goals in 57 games across all competitions last season. He has now recorded 30 goals in 120 career appearances for the club, establishing himself as a key figure in the squad as they prepare for the new campaign.
