New Mexico wrestler claims historic Fargo national title

Eloise Woolsey, an 18-year-old wrestler from Cleveland High School in New Mexico, has secured the 155-pound title at the Junior Girls Freestyle Wrestling Championships in Fargo, North Dakota. The victory makes Woolsey the first girl from New Mexico to win a national championship at the event, which is widely regarded as the most elite competition on the high school wrestling calendar.

Woolsey defeated Ella Poalillo of New Jersey 8-5 in the final match to claim the gold medal. The result was particularly notable given Poalillo’s standing as the nation’s No. 1 ranked wrestler at 155 pounds and the No. 2 seed in Fargo. Poalillo, a high school senior who won a bronze medal at the U17 World Championships and is committed to Iowa State University, held a 2-1 lead after the first period before Woolsey rallied to win.

Competing from a bracket of nearly 128 wrestlers, Woolsey recorded six wins and one bye over three days of competition. Seeded eighth and ranked 12th nationally by USA Wrestling, she defeated opponents seeded first, second, and fourth en route to the title. Her performance also earned her the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler award.

The freestyle format utilised in Fargo differs from standard high school rules, with matches consisting of two three-minute periods rather than the three two-minute periods typical of high school bouts. Woolsey, who previously finished seventh in the 155-pound weight class at last year’s tournament, noted that she approached the final without studying her opponent extensively. “At the end of the day, it’s just another match,” she said.

Woolsey will attend Colorado Mesa University, a Division II program, where she previously secured a 6-4 decision against Connecticut’s Sarah Henckel in the semifinals. During her high school career, she won four individual state titles, two in Hawaii and two in Rio Rancho with the Storm.
