Netflix has launched a new internal studio named INKubator, dedicated to producing short-form animated content using generative artificial intelligence. The initiative, first reported by The Verge, marks a significant step in the streaming service’s broader strategy to integrate AI technologies into its content pipeline. The studio is currently in the recruitment phase, with job listings indicating the hiring of key personnel, including a head of technology.

Initial output from INKubator will focus on animated shorts and specials. However, current job descriptions suggest that the team’s ambitions extend beyond short-form material. One listing explicitly states plans to eventually expand from shorts to longer-form content, although the timeline for such a shift remains undefined as the studio is still building its core team.

The launch aligns with Netflix’s recent and more aggressive adoption of AI tools across its business. The company has already begun utilising the technology in its advertising campaigns and recently acquired InterPositive, an AI startup founded by actor Ben Affleck. This move signals a shift from experimental use to dedicated production infrastructure within the organisation.

Industry reaction to AI in content creation has been mixed, with Hollywood expressing conflicted feelings about the technology’s role in creative workflows.
