Netflix and Sega develop Crazy Taxi, Stranger Than Heaven adaptations
The deal includes films based on Crazy Taxi and Stranger Than Heaven, plus a new Sonic animated series aimed at pre-school audiences.
Netflix and Sega are developing three new adaptations of Sega video games: films based on Crazy Taxi and Stranger Than Heaven, along with another Sonic animated series.
The Crazy Taxi film is being written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, whose credits include last year’s reboot of The Naked Gun. Engadget reported that the project appears to be a live-action comedy, although Netflix has not announced a release date or confirmed those details.
A live-action crime film based on Stranger Than Heaven is also in development. The game, from Yakuza and Like a Dragon developer RGG Studio, is scheduled to arrive on PC and consoles on 15 January.
Netflix is also planning a new Sonic animated series for pre-school audiences, following Sonic Prime. The company described the show as a comedic, emotionally grounded series for children.
The Crazy Taxi film is expected to follow Crazy Taxi World Tour, which is reportedly scheduled for release next year, though the timing has not been confirmed. Netflix’s other game-related projects include adaptations of Assassin’s Creed, Overcooked and Diablo.
