Neal Stephenson argues handwriting boosts brain function and reduces fatigue

Acclaimed author Neal Stephenson has published a detailed analysis on his Substack platform arguing that writing by hand recruits more of the brain than typing. Drawing on a quarter-century of daily practice, Stephenson contends that the physical act of composing manuscripts with a fountain pen and paper offers significant cognitive and ergonomic advantages over digital tools. He notes that the process involves solving a series of small, continuous problems regarding spacing, letter connection, and coordination, which must be integrated in real time with abstract thought processing.
Stephenson, who switched from keyboard to fountain pen 25 years ago, asserts that he has never experienced writer’s cramp or hand soreness despite writing thousands of pages. He attributes this to the minimal force required when using a properly functioning fountain pen, where the nib skates on a lake of ink. This contrasts sharply with pencils and old-school ballpoints, which he argues require excessive pressure that leads to physical fatigue and leaves visible imprints on the paper.
The author advises against using styluses on glass devices, comparing the lack of friction to trying to dribble a soccer ball on a frictionless air hockey table. He argues that a small amount of friction, or "tooth," is essential for the brain and hand muscles to control the instrument effectively. Removing this friction forces the user to expend more mental and physical effort to maintain control, making the process more tiring than writing on paper.
Regarding materials, Stephenson recommends paper with at least 25 per cent cotton content to prevent ink bleeding, noting that cheap printer paper and yellow legal pads often produce blurry lines. He also emphasises the importance of cursive writing, stating it is far less tiring than printing letter by letter. He dismisses common concerns about left-handed smudging, asserting that the correct ink-paper combination allows ink to dry quickly enough to prevent issues.
The article also highlights a resurgence in handwritten examinations in education, driven by concerns over artificial intelligence. Stephenson observes that this shift creates new challenges for students who have not learned longhand writing and teachers struggling to decipher illegible scripts. He concludes that while digital tools have their place, the ecosystem of fountain pens and paper remains a balanced, efficient method for composing complex ideas.
