NBA season upends preseason assumptions with historic scoring surge and Detroit turnaround
The 2025–26 campaign has defied early projections, marked by a league-wide offensive explosion and unexpected structural shifts in team competitiveness.

The 2025–26 National Basketball Association season has commenced with outcomes that have significantly diverged from preseason expectations, prompting a reevaluation of competitive balances across the league. According to a report by Yahoo Sports, the early stages of the campaign have been defined by an unprecedented offensive surge and unexpected successes from teams previously considered bottom-dwellers.
A primary indicator of this shift is the volume of high-scoring performances recorded in the opening fortnight. Nineteen games saw individual players score 40 points or more within the first two weeks of the season. Notable individual outputs included Aaron Gordon posting 50 points and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander recording a career-high 55 points, which required 26 free throw attempts. This statistical density has sparked debate regarding whether scoring has permanently outpaced defensive capabilities or if defensive standards have declined.
In the Eastern Conference, the Detroit Pistons have achieved a 60-win season, a result described as having no real precedent in modern basketball given their status as the league’s worst team just two seasons prior. The turnaround has been anchored by All-NBA recognition for both Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren, signalling that the improvement is rooted in established talent rather than a temporary anomaly.
On the rookie front, Edgecombe has emerged as a frontrunner for the Rookie of the Year award. Averaging 19 points, five rebounds, and four assists per game on 47 per cent shooting and 44 per cent from three-point range, his performance has reshaped perceptions of his immediate impact. The Philadelphia 76ers, who drafted him, had anticipated a developmental timeline that has been significantly accelerated by his current production levels.
Meanwhile, the San Antonio Spurs have defied expectations in the Western Conference despite losing Fox to injury before the season began. Victor Wembanyama and Keldon Johnson have assumed larger roles, allowing the team to perform as one of the more competitive sides in the conference. Concurrently, Los Angeles Lakers role player Reeves has altered his professional trajectory by averaging 35.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 8.5 assists in the first week of the season on 58 per cent shooting, fundamentally changing how the league views his development.
